Gyuma: Japanese BBQ Buffet @ Thonglor, Bangkok

Cuisine: Japanese BBQ
Price: THB500 per person without alcohol (what I paid for)
Visited: 27 February 2011
Food: 3/10
Atmosphere: 2/10
Value for money: 2/10
Services: 1/10
Overall: 2/10

At the very entrance side of Soi Thonglor, located a tiny yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) buffet restaurant called Gyuma which is famous for its all you can eat at the price of THB499 per person. The restaurant is simply decorated in a bright tone. One thing to note is that it is rather tiny and can accommodate around 30 people, hence, reservation is important. Gyuma is conveniently located: two minutes walk from BTS Thonglor Station. In case of driving, parking along the road maybe the most convenient way, however, the restaurant also offers parking space at 55th Plaza, which is located a minute away by walking on the opposite side.

On the beef range, there are pretty much 4 choices: Salted Beef Tongue (ลิ้นวัวหมักเกลือ), Sirloin Beef (เนื้อติดมัน), Marble Beef (เนื้อหินอ่อน), and Fillet Beef (เนื้อไร้มัน). Beef here may not be really tender but acceptable for its price. I found it at the similar level to Giant Yakiniku (Soi Sukhumvit 39) but not as good as SumiSumi Yakiniku (Soi Sukhumvit 24). Additionally, freshness of ingredient was rather bad, especially Salted Beef Tongue in which taste, odour, and scent from losing freshness were noticed automatically. Also, forget about juiciness of meat here.

When it came to pork, I found this more flavourful and tender. I had a chance to try 3 types of pork dish here: Pork Neck (สันคอหมู), Marinated Pork Loin (สันในหมูหมักน้ำจิ้ม), and Fresh Bacon (เบคอนสดราดซอสพิเศษ). Personally, I like Marinated Pork Loin most due to its tenderness but this was rather too salty, could be from over marinated. Fresh Bacon was also tender but beware of the fatty part.

On seafood side, there are River Prawn (กุ้งแม่น้ำสด) (not seafood really >_<), Salmon (ปลาแซลมอน), and Squid (ปลาหมึก). All of which were not so bad, in particular River Prawn which was rather fresh and size of it was not bad at all.

Additionally, there are quite a number of side dishes and vegetables, with ok taste, to be selected: Eringi Mushroom (เห็ดเออรินจิสไลด์), Assorted Vegetables (ผักรวม), Gyuma Salad (ผัดกาดหอมคลุกซอสน้ำมันงา), Kimuji (ผักกาดดองกิมจิ), Chikuva Salad (ยำชิกูวะ), Garlic Fried Rice (ข้าวผัดกระเทียม), and Beef Croquette (โคโรเกะเนื้อ). All of which were ok but Beef Croquette was not acceptable to any degree.

For dessert, there was only 1 choice for everyone: Hot Sweet Bean Soup with Comchi Red Bean (โมจิถั่วแดง), also available in cold. This could be the worst dish at Gyuma. Taste of bean and bean itself were lack, the mochi was too soft and no chewiness, no taste.

Overall quality of food here is just eatable. But what would you expect from yakiniku buffet of this price, you get what you pay though. What really disappoint me was the very poor quality of service and awareness of staffs here. They really have no clue of whatsoever I asked and really lack of service mind. Such a high standard in quality of service was not the expectation but inadequacy was just unacceptable.
